The Lamborghini Hurácan is not only a stunning car, but also an outstanding feat of engineering. Designed as the successor to the hugely popular V10 Lamborghini Gallardo, the Hurácan took Lamborghini to a new level with its edgy design, aeronautics-inspired engineering and mind-blowing performance. Unsurprisingly, the model was a runaway success, and variations were quickly launched: a terrifying track version; the Huracán GT3; a new V10 model and finally the Huracan LP610-4 Spyder.
The Huracan LP610-4 Spyder is a soft-top version whose luxurious comfort, pure and dynamic design and inspiring technology ensure that it is an iconic Lamborghini in its own right. With its lightweight, electrohydraulic soft top, the car has a distinctive presence with roof both open and closed, as well as maximum comfort for driver and passenger with uncompromising handling and performance.
The performance, powered by a 5.2 litre V10 engine, is as expected - superb. Yet it also delivers the unique thrill that only a soft-top can, the unbridled freedom of driving in the open air, with the sounds of nature and the engine's roar gloriously intermingled in one unforgettable soundtrack.
The performance is, as you would expect, one of the key reasons for hiring this stunning Huracan LP610-4 Spyder. Let's do the all important figures first: this car can do 0-62 MPH in just 3.4 seconds, and get to 124 MPH in 10.2 seconds. Add in a top speed of 201MPH and you quickly see that the car's performance has been entirely uncompromised by the removal of the hard top.
The car is powered by an extremely responsive 5.2 litre V10 engine, which revs up to 8,700 rpm and composes a richly tuneful and unmistakeable symphony of sound. The "Iniezione Diretta Stratificata" combines direct and indirect gasoline injection, while the new stop start technology and cylinder on demand - i.e. the deactivation of one cylinder bank under partial load - means that it has a surprisingly low fuel consumption.
Coupled to the engine is the "Lamborghini Doppia Frizione" (LDF) 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox, which delivers lightning-fast gear shifts. Electronically controlled coupling in the transmission also plays an important role by allowing torque to be freely shifted between the two axles.
To ensure that the driver gets the most from the technology, the Huracan LP610-4 Spyder comes with three different driving programmes. These: "Strada", "Sport" and "Corsa", impact the characteristics of the engine, sound, transmission, all-wheel drive and ESC handling system. These programmes are complimented by the Lamborghini Piattaforma Inerziale system, which uses six sensors to supply information on the car's movement to its handling systems. As befits a car with this performance, the brakes are the highest quality carbon-ceramic system, with silver brake calipers and 14.96 inch diameter front disks.
This is normally where we'd stress all the benefits of the car. In this case, however, we really don't think we need to - plus if you don't hire it we'll have more time to play with it ourselves!
To create such stunning performance, the highest level of innovative engineering was required on both the chassis and the body. Every single element was redesigned for the precise purpose of eliminating the roof without compromising any of the car's aerodynamics or torsional stiffness.
The chassis on the Lamborghini Huracán LP610-4 Spyder combines aluminum with carbon fibre while the body panels are made from aluminium - making the chassis an astonishing 40% more rigid than the Gallardo Spyder. Furthermore, this innovative chassis enables the car to be just 120kg heavier than the regular Huracán despite its roof mechanism, giving it a power to weight ratio of 2.53 kg per hp. The car even has 50% more downforce than the Gallardo Spyder when its roof is up!
In terms of design, our beautiful slate grey Spyder clearly demonstrates the latest evolution of Lamborghini's characteristic design language. Sharp edges, uncompromising style and more than a dash of Italian flair. It looks just as fast and exciting as it really is.
Its most noticeable feature is its black soft-top roof. Although many of the car's competitors have hard-top convertible roofs, the marque chose to remain true to their Spyder legacy by keeping the soft top. Fitting perfectly into the Spyder's silhouette while up, the roof folds away in just 17 seconds at speeds of up to 31MPH.
Once the roof is opened, the car's athletic and powerful lines are revealed - something not obscured by the hidden automatic pop-up safety bars. Opening the roof also raises two moveable fins at the rear, which start at the seatbacks and continue the roof line, perfectly shaping the side view of the Spyder. There is even an integrated duct reduces turbulence in the headroom during open top driving.
Despite it being such a performance-oriented car, the interior is both elegant and comfortable. The two seater cockpit, which combines chic black materials with striking red seats, is entirely designed around driver and passenger ergonomics. Both recline in sports seats covered in the finest leather, with everything they need within easy reach.
For the driver, this means gear paddles and control functions located on the leather steering wheel, as well as easy access to the soft top, rear windscreen and start / stop button on the centre tunnel console. The start / stop button is underneath a red cover, giving it a military jet feel!
Both occupants are also well placed to access the 12.3-inch TFT display which plays host to the Lamborghini Infotainment System II. This has a full media interface so you can play music from your iPhone as you zoom along. Overall, the interior feel is one of absolutely quality, with the highest quality materials and finish present everywhere you look. It's a joy to be in, even when the car is stationary!
