Just When You Thought the R8 Couldn’t Get any Better…

Audi have cut its top off, creating the first ever R8 Spyder. Revealed at the recent New York Auto Show, this stunning new model can do 0-62 MPH in just 3.6 seconds and reach top speeds of almost 198 MPH. Not bad for a convertible!
The car is powered by the same naturally-aspirated 5.2 litre V10 engine that’s found in its be-roofed sibling, which produces 398 lb-ft of torque and 540 horsepower. The difference, however, is that – according to Audi – the car’s passengers get a more intense engine experience. This isn’t hard to imagine: anyone who’s heard the R8 revved from the outside can attest to the ferocity of its ear-shattering growl.
The convertible roof is made from lightweight cloth and opens or closes in just 20 seconds at speeds of up to 31 MPH. The rear window can also be adjusted – retracted or extended – to meet the driver’s needs. To keep the convertible’s weight down, Audi used an 80-20 aluminium and carbon fibre mix in their new Audi Space frame. They’ve also boosted torsional rigidity by over 505 compared to the previous model. In terms of the interior, it’s pretty much business as usual for those who have seen the coupe. New features are an innovative smartphone interface, and head restraint loudspeakers for the Bang & Olufsen sound system in every seat. As is standard with a new launch, Audi have yet to release any concrete price or release date details.
